Can ChatGPT be an architect?

No. ChatGPT can talk about architecture very well, and it's a useful assistant, but it can't design a building you can actually build, draw accurate plans or take responsibility for anything.

ChatGPT is often the first AI tool architects try. In an AIA study published in 2025, chatbots were among the most common AI tools architects used, and it's easy to see why: ChatGPT writes, explains and answers questions about almost anything, architecture included.

But talking well about buildings is not the same as designing one. Think of it as a fast, well-read helper whose work always needs checking.

What ChatGPT is good at

ChatGPT is a language tool. It's at its best when the job is words: reading, writing, summarising and explaining. For architects that covers a surprising amount of the week:

  • Turning meeting notes into a clear client brief.
  • Drafting emails, proposals, competition texts and first versions of reports.
  • Explaining unfamiliar terms, rules or processes in plain language.
  • Brainstorming options, questions for consultants or names for a project.
  • Summarising long documents so you know where to look.

In the same AIA study, architects aged 35 to 50 leaned towards chatbots most, while younger architects preferred image generators.

Where ChatGPT struggles

Space and geometry. Buildings are about space, and that's where language models are weakest. In FloorplanQA, a 2025 research benchmark that tested language models on 1,800 room layouts, the authors found that "while models may succeed in shallow queries, they often fail to respect physical constraints". Suggested routes through a room often broke clearance and collision rules, and results got worse in dense, irregular rooms.

Building codes. In an October 2025 test of 43 real building code questions, general chat tools including ChatGPT fell below what the testers called professional usability. That study was run by UpCodes, which sells its own code tool, so read it with care, but the lesson matches what OpenAI says itself.

Confident mistakes. OpenAI's own help pages say ChatGPT "can produce incorrect or misleading outputs" and may sound confident even when it's wrong. Its advice is to treat answers as "a first draft, not a final source".

The architect's exam. In a well-known 2023 test, GPT-4 answered just over 70% of the text questions on a practice US licensing exam correctly, but it couldn't read the drawings in the rest. We cover that test in Can AI act as an architect?

Ask ChatGPT, then check the answer in the real document.

How to check ChatGPT's answers

Checking doesn't have to take long. Four habits catch most problems:

  • Ask for the source. Then open it and read the paragraph yourself.
  • Check numbers against the original. Areas, dimensions, fire ratings and dates are where small mistakes hide.
  • Ask the same question twice. If the answers differ, neither is safe to use without checking.
  • Keep the final word human. Anything that goes to a client, a council or a contractor is read by the person who signs it.

Watch what you paste in

On personal ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI may use your conversations to train its models unless you switch this off. You'll find it under Settings, then Data Controls, then "Improve the model for everyone". OpenAI points professionals who need more control over their data to its business plans.

For architects, the simple rule is: don't paste confidential client information, addresses or unpublished schemes into a chat tool unless you know how that data is handled.

What to ask ChatGPT, and what not to

Here's a quick guide with real examples you can try.

You askVerdictWhy
"Turn these meeting notes into a one-page client brief."Good useWriting and structuring is its strength. You review the result.
"Draft a 300-word text for our competition entry."Good useA fast first draft you can edit into your own voice.
"What should I ask the structural engineer about a timber frame?"Good useHelps you prepare. The engineer gives the answers.
"Explain planning permission and building regulations simply."Good, then checkUseful overview. Confirm details for your location.
"What fire rating does this wall need?"Check in the codeIt may be right or confidently wrong. Use it to find where to look.
"Draw a scaled floor plan for a three-bedroom house."Not reliableNo accurate dimensions, clearances or structure.
"Is my design compliant?"NoCompliance needs the drawings, the local rules and a professional.

"Verdict" is our guidance based on the studies above, not a test of every version of ChatGPT.

What about images?

ChatGPT can make images too, from a text description or from a picture you upload. It's handy for mood images and quick ideas. But it's a general chat tool: you steer it with words, results can change from one try to the next, and the building can drift away from your drawing. Consistency is a common complaint: in a 2026 survey by Chaos and Architizer, 48% of architects and designers named inconsistent or poor output as their biggest challenge with AI.

Sketchfest is built for one job: rendering your design. It's made for architects. You upload a hand sketch, a CAD screenshot or a view of your 3D model, and get a photoreal render of that design in seconds. It follows your drawing, so the proportions and the idea stay yours. There are no prompts to write and nothing to install.

Use ChatGPT for words. Use Sketchfest for pictures of your building.

Quick answers

Can ChatGPT design a house?

It can describe a house, suggest a room list and sketch rough ideas, but it can't produce a design that fits a real site, meets local rules and is ready to build. For that you need a qualified professional. More in Can I use AI instead of an architect?

Can ChatGPT draw architectural plans?

Not accurate ones. It can produce diagrams or images that look like plans, but without reliable dimensions, wall thicknesses, clearances or structure. Use CAD or BIM for real drawings. More in Can ChatGPT draw architectural plans?

Is ChatGPT good for architecture?

Yes, as an assistant for writing, research and preparation, as long as you check what it says. It's not a design tool and not a replacement for professional judgement. See Is ChatGPT good for architecture? for how to use it at each project stage.

Can ChatGPT read building codes?

It can explain them in general terms. But in an October 2025 test on real code questions, general chat tools fell below what the testers called professional usability. Use it to find where to look, then read the code itself.
