Is ChatGPT good for architecture?

Yes, for the parts of the job that are about words: briefs, research, reports, client emails and preparing for meetings.

Writing takes a big share of an architect's week: briefs, reports, specifications, letters and minutes. That's where ChatGPT is strongest. In RIBA's 2026 survey, 24% of architects using AI already used it for specification writing or technical design.

It's not good at drawings, geometry or checking compliance, so it works best as an assistant whose work you check, not as a design tool.

What the research says

Two well-known studies show both sides of ChatGPT.

It speeds up writing. In an MIT study published in Science in 2023, 453 professionals such as marketers, consultants and managers did realistic writing tasks. Those with ChatGPT finished in 40% less time, and independent reviewers rated their work 18% higher in quality.

But not every task. In a 2023 Harvard Business School study with Boston Consulting Group, 758 consultants worked on tasks with and without GPT-4. On tasks the AI handled well, they completed 12.2% more tasks, 25.1% faster, and with better quality. On a task just outside what the AI could do, people using it were less likely to reach the right answer than those working alone. The researchers called this a "jagged frontier": AI is great at some tasks and weak at others that look very similar.

Architects report the same pattern. In RIBA's 2026 AI report, 32% of AI users use it for practice management and 24% for specification writing or technical design. In a 2026 survey by Chaos and Architizer, 85% of AI users said it saves them time. The skill is knowing which side of the frontier a task sits on.

For architects, that frontier is easy to picture. Writing a brief from your notes sits well inside it. Working out whether a stair fits in a given space sits outside it, even though both look like simple questions.

Where ChatGPT fits in a project

Here's how ChatGPT can help at each stage of the RIBA Plan of Work, the stages most UK architects use to run a project, and what to check every time.

StageUse ChatGPT toCheck before using
0 Strategic definitionSummarise the client's goals and list questions for the first meeting. That it reflects what the client said.
1 Preparation and briefingTurn meeting notes into a brief and a first room list.Room sizes and numbers against your own judgement.
2 Concept designBrainstorm ideas and draft the design statement.Any precedent it names actually exists.
3 Spatial coordinationWrite up meeting minutes and list questions for engineers.Nothing important was left out.
4 Technical designDraft first versions of specification clauses and explain a regulation.Every clause and figure against the real standard.
5 Manufacturing and constructionDraft letters to the contractor and summarise site reports.Facts, dates and anything contractual.
6 HandoverOutline the handover pack and a checklist. That it matches the real building.
7 UseWrite a questionnaire for people using the building.Questions are clear and neutral.

Stage names are from the RIBA Plan of Work 2020. The tasks are our suggestions.

Notice what's missing from the table: drawing plans, sizing structure and confirming compliance. Those sit on the wrong side of the frontier. We explain why in Can ChatGPT be an architect?

Five tips for better answers

  1. Give context. Say the building type, the country, the client and who will read the result. "A two-page brief for a small primary school in Spain, for the school board" gets a far better answer than "write a brief".
  2. Start from your own material. Paste your meeting notes or an old report and ask ChatGPT to shape them. It works best with your thinking, not instead of it.
  3. Ask for options. "Give me three versions" is quicker than rewriting one version three times.
  4. Ask where facts come from, then check. OpenAI itself says ChatGPT "can produce incorrect or misleading outputs". Treat every figure, rule and reference as unchecked.
  5. Protect client data. Don't paste confidential details unless you know how your account handles them. On personal accounts, conversations can be used for training unless you switch it off in Data Controls.

A prompt you can try

Here is a prompt that puts most of these tips together. Paste your own notes at the end.

The last two instructions matter most. They stop ChatGPT filling gaps with guesses, and they show you exactly where to look.

ChatGPT for words, Sketchfest for pictures

ChatGPT can make images too, and Midjourney is great for mood boards. But with general tools you describe a building in words and the AI fills in the rest, so the picture can drift away from what you designed.

Sketchfest is built for architects and starts from your drawing. You upload a hand sketch, a CAD screenshot or a view of your 3D model, and get a photoreal render of that design in seconds. It follows your drawing, so the building in the picture is yours. No prompts to write and nothing to install. Use ChatGPT to write the design statement, and Sketchfest to show the design.

Quick answers

Which tasks save architects the most time with ChatGPT?

Writing tasks: briefs, reports, proposals, minutes and emails. That's where the research shows the biggest time savings, and where mistakes are easiest to spot.

Can ChatGPT write architectural specifications?

It can write a useful first draft of clauses, and 24% of RIBA's AI users already use AI for specification or technical design. Every clause still has to be checked against the real standards and products.

Is ChatGPT better than Midjourney for architecture?

They do different jobs. ChatGPT is strongest with words, Midjourney with mood images. To show your own design as a realistic image, use a tool that starts from your drawing.

Is ChatGPT safe for client information?

On personal accounts, OpenAI may use conversations for training unless you switch it off under Data Controls. Leave confidential details out unless you know how your account handles them.
