Can ChatGPT draw architectural plans?

Not real ones. ChatGPT can make pictures that look like floor plans, but not drawings with a true scale, dimensions that add up, or stairs that meet building rules.

It's one of the first things people ask ChatGPT to do for a house project. The answer looks convincing at first glance, but planning drawings in England, for example, have to be at a stated scale such as 1:200 or 1:500, and a picture from a chat tool has none.

ChatGPT can describe a layout in words, which is a useful start. For plans you can submit or build from, you still need CAD or BIM and a person who knows the rules.

What you get when you ask ChatGPT for a plan

Ask ChatGPT to "draw a floor plan for a three-bedroom house" and you'll usually get one of three things:

  • A picture of a plan. It looks convincing at first glance: walls, rooms, maybe furniture and labels. But it's an image, not a drawing. Lines aren't measured, and numbers on it may not match the room sizes.
  • A written layout. A list of rooms with suggested sizes and how they connect. Often a useful starting point for a brief.
  • Code. If you ask, it can write a script or a simple drawing file. Someone still has to run it, check every line and fix what's wrong.

Editing doesn't fix the problem either. OpenAI's own help page says that when you select part of an image to change, "highlights are not always precise, and edits may extend beyond the area you selected". Fine for a mood image. Not fine for a wall that has to be 100 mm thick.

Why plans are hard for language AI

A plan is geometry and rules, and that's where language models are weakest. In FloorplanQA, a 2025 research benchmark that tested language models on 1,800 room layouts, the researchers found that "while models may succeed in shallow queries, they often fail to respect physical constraints". Suggested routes broke clearance and collision rules, and results got worse in dense, irregular rooms.

Researchers have been working on this for years. Tell2Design, presented at a major language research conference in 2023, built a set of more than 80,000 floor plans paired with written instructions, because, in the authors' words, plans "must satisfy different constraints that are not present in generating artistic images". In short: making a pretty picture and making a correct plan are very different jobs.

What a real plan needs

Here's a checklist of what makes a plan usable, and how a ChatGPT plan image compares.

Where AI does help with plans

AI is still useful around the plan, just not as the one drawing it:

  • Before the plan: ChatGPT can turn a client's wishes into a room list and adjacency notes. See Is ChatGPT good for architecture? for more ways to use it.
  • Inside your CAD program: CAD makers are adding AI where it's reliable. Autodesk's latest AutoCAD, for example, suggests where to place blocks, reads markups from PDFs and paper and applies them to the drawing, and offers an assistant for standards checks.
  • After the plan: once the design exists, AI is very good at showing it, which is where Sketchfest comes in.

Turn a ChatGPT layout into a real brief

If you're planning a home project, ChatGPT's written layout can still be useful, as long as it goes to the right person:

  1. Ask for a room list, not a drawing. Rooms, rough sizes and which rooms should sit next to each other.
  2. Add what only you know. Your budget, how you live, and what you like and dislike about your current home.
  3. Take it to an architect or designer. They test it against the site, the rules and the structure.
  4. Ask to see the design as a picture. A render of the real design shows whether it matches what you had in mind.

Draw the plan yourself, let AI show it

Clients rarely fall in love with a plan. They fall in love with a picture of the place. General tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney can make lovely images from a description, but they invent their own building, so it won't match the plan you drew.

Sketchfest starts from your drawing. It's built for architects: you upload a hand sketch, a CAD screenshot or a view of your 3D model, and get a photoreal render of that design in seconds. It follows your drawing, so the render matches your plan. No prompts to write and nothing to install.

Quick answers

Can ChatGPT make a floor plan from my description?

It can make an image that looks like one and a written layout. Use them as ideas or as a brief for whoever draws the real plan.

Can I use a ChatGPT plan for planning permission?

No. Planning applications need accurate drawings at a stated scale, and someone has to take responsibility for them. An AI picture won't meet that.

Which AI can draw architectural plans?

AI features inside CAD and BIM programs help with parts of drafting, but plans are still drawn and checked by people. More in Can AI do architect plans?
