How much do architects charge for renderings?

In eight studio price lists we checked, one exterior view cost about $84 to $750. Architects bill renders inside the design fee, as an expense or as an extra service.

Ask what renderings cost and you get two kinds of answer. Architects who buy images want to know what a freelancer or a studio will charge. Architects who make them want to know what to put in a fee proposal. The spread is wide: in eight studio price lists from five countries, one exterior view cost from about $84 to $750.

This guide sets out the published prices for freelancers, studios, an in-house visualiser and AI tools, what drives a quote, how to brief a renderer, and how architects bill renders to clients.

What renders cost: the published prices

On 27 October 2026 we read the prices that marketplaces, studios, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and AI tool makers publish themselves. These are list prices, not quotes. To compare currencies, we used the European Central Bank's reference rates of that day: 1 euro was 1.115 US dollars, 4.402 Polish zloty, 106.0635 Indian rupees and 0.83658 pounds.

Freelancers on marketplaces

Upwork says architectural rendering specialists typically charge $20 to $30 an hour, and 3D rendering artists $25 to $40. Per project, it lists $400 to $1,000 for a standard exterior still and $200 to $500 for a basic interior, with 1 to 2 weeks for a standard exterior. Fiverr's cost guide of 12 March 2026 puts architecture and interior visualisation services at an average of $178.97. A smaller render marketplace reports a median of $270 a project across 146 projects in 2026, and a median of 15 days from hiring to final delivery.

Visualisation studios

We found eight studios in five countries with a published price list. The studios' pages are in the sources.

Converted to US dollars, one exterior view cost $84 to $750, median about $286, and one interior view $53 to $550, median about $157. An aerial view cost $158 to $1,000, median $799 (five studios), and animation about $8 to $75 a second, median about $22 (six studios). For each studio we took the lowest price for one view, and half the price where it sells two views together. Five of the eight say how many rounds of changes are included: one or two, or until the image is right.

An in-house visualiser

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has no wage series for architectural visualisers. The closest, special effects artists and animators, had a median pay of $102,030 a year, or $49.06 an hour, in 2025. In US private industry in June 2026, wages were 70.0% of what employers spent on staff, and benefits 30.0%. At that average, the median salary costs about $145,800 a year, or about $70 an hour. Then add a render engine seat at $445 to $1,149 a year at list price (Twinmotion is free for firms under $1 million revenue) and a computer with a strong graphics card. Our guide to the top 5 rendering software for architects compares the engines.

AI image tools

MidjourneyBasic, $10 a month3.3 hours of fast GPU time; firms over $1 million revenue must buy Pro ($60) or Mega ($120)
Adobe FireflyStandard, £9.98 a month (UK)2,000 credits; unlimited standard image generations
SketchUp AI RenderGo, $10.75 a month paid yearly100 credits a month, at 10 credits an image

An entry plan costs $10 to $20 a month. A month of any of them costs less than one exterior view from the cheapest studio in our sample.

What drives the price

A render's price is mostly someone's time. Anything that adds modelling, set dressing or rounds of changes adds cost.

The same five images can cost four times as much from one studio as from another. Control differs too: with a freelancer or a studio, every change waits for the next round; with AI, you change the image yourself, the same day.

How to brief a renderer and keep the cost down

  1. Fix the design first. Every change after the model is built uses up a round. Settle the options with quick AI images before you commission the finals.
  2. Send everything at once. Plans, sections, a site plan, elevations and a schedule of materials and colours.
  3. Mark every view on a plan: camera position, eye height and direction.
  4. Order the views together. Further views of the same model cost less.
  5. Agree the rounds, the files and the uses in writing.
  6. Send one set of comments per round, on one marked-up sheet.

One marked-up sheet per round: every comment from the team in one place.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • What may we use the images for? Planning, competitions, your website, the client's brochure. Get every use in writing.
  • What counts as a round? The San Francisco studio's two rounds cover "changes of up to 60% of the scene".
  • What files do we receive? The Miami studio delivers one final image "at 6K resolution".
  • Who owns the 3D model? The San Francisco studio includes "3D models if they are part of the order".
  • How is payment split? The Miami studio asks for 50% upfront and 50% on delivery.

How architects bill renders to clients

AIA's standard owner and architect agreement, B101 of 2017, gives a frame for most methods.

  • Inside the design fee. Schematic design documents "may include some combination of study models, perspective sketches, or digital representations". Quick design-stage images fit here.
  • As a reimbursable expense. B101 lists "Renderings, physical models, mock-ups, professional photography, and presentation materials requested by the Owner" among reimbursable expenses, at cost plus an agreed percentage.
  • As a supplemental or additional service. A set of marketing images for the client's sales campaign fits here, at a fixed price per view.
  • By the hour. Suits open-ended work. Give an estimate and a cap.

Whichever you choose, write the number of images and rounds into the fee. Barbara Kaucky, chair of the RIBA Small Practice Group, put the reason plainly:

revisions and variations are design work that takes staff time and therefore should have a cost attached.

Where AI and Sketchfest fit

Design-stage images are where architects use AI most. In RIBA's 2026 survey, early-stage design visualisation was the top AI task, named by 56% of AI users. The 2025 Chaos and Architizer survey found concept images (44%) and variations of design options (35%) among the main uses, while 43% of firms called slow rendering a major challenge. In the 2026 survey, 85% of AI users said AI saves them time.

ChatGPT and Midjourney are good for mood and ideas from a few words. Sketchfest is built for architects and for one job: turning your own drawing into a render. Upload a hand sketch, a CAD screenshot or a 3D view and get a photoreal render of your design in seconds. It follows your drawing, so there are no prompts to write, and there is nothing to install: it works in the browser. Projects stay private, and drawings are not used to train AI.

For the few hero images of a sales campaign, a studio may still be the right call. For the images that move a design forward, AI gives you a render while the idea is fresh. For the methods, read how to render architecture with AI.

Quick answers

How much does one architectural render cost?

In eight studio price lists, one exterior view cost $84 to $750, median about $286, and one interior view $53 to $550, median about $157.

How much does an architectural animation cost?

About $22 a second at the median of six studios, so about $1,300 for one minute.

Is an in-house visualiser cheaper than a studio?

Only with enough work. At the US median, a visualiser costs about $70 an hour with average benefits, plus software and a computer. Divide the yearly cost by the images you need.
